IntroductionMedication Usage

Treatment of duodenal ulcer and benign gastric ulcer, including those that complicate treatments with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NASIDs).
– Prophylactic treatment of duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer and/or gastroduodenal erosions induced by NSAIDs in patients at risk (elderly subjects and/or patients with a history of gastroduodenal erosions) who require continuous NSAID treatment.
– Gastroesophageal reflux. Omeprazole is indicated for the treatment of reflux esophagitis, severe symptoms of non-inflammatory reflux disease, and mild symptoms not responding to conventional therapy.
– Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
– Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcer associated with Helicobacter pylori in both dual (combined treatment with amoxicillin or clarithromycin) and triple therapy (combined with two antimicrobials simultaneously) whose eradication rate is markedly greater with a shorter duration of treatment.
Each capsule contains: Omeprazole (INN) 20mg.
Omeprazole must be administered preferably in the morning swallowing the capsules whole, with the help of some liquid. Patients with swallowing difficulties can open the capsules and take the contents or suspend them in a slightly acid liquid such as juice, yogurt or sour milk. The suspension should be taken within 30 minutes or preparation. These patients can also suck the capsules and swallow their contents. Chewing or crushing the contents should be avoided.
Duodenal ulcer: The recommended dose is 20mg once daily in patients with active duodenal ulcer. Symptom resolution is rapid, and in most patients healing occurs in the first two weeks of treatment. Patients whose ulcers have not completely healed after the first cycle usually experience healing during an additional period of two weeks of treatment. In patients with duodenal ulcer with a poor therapeutic response, the recommended dose is 40mg once daily, and healing is usually achieved within 4 weeks. For maintenance treatment of duodenal ulcer, the recommended dose is 20mg once daily for 12 months after an acute healing phase.
Gastric ulcer: The recommended dose is omeprazole 20mg once daily. Symptom resolution is rapid and in most patients healing occurs within the first four weeks of treatment. For patients whose ulcer(s) have not completely healed after the initial cycle, healing usually occurs after an additional period of four weeks of treatment. In patients with gastric ulcer with a poor response to therapy, the recommended dose is omeprazole 40mg once daily, and healing usually occurs within 8 weeks.
Gastric or duodenal ulcers, or gastrointestinal erosions associated or not to maintenance therapy with NSAIDs: The recommended dose is omeprazole 20mg once daily. Symptom resolution is rapid, and in most patients healing occurs within four weeks. In patients in whom complete healing has not occurred after the initial cycle, healing usually occurs during an additional period of four weeks of treatment. For the prevention of gastric or duodenal ulcers, or gastrointestinal erosions caused by NSAID administra- tion, the recommended is omeprazole 20mg once daily.
